    8. ⭐ Challenge Question — Model Answer

The Rosetta Stone was important because it contained the same decree written in three scripts: Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, Demotic script, and Ancient Greek. Since scholars in the early 19th century could already read Ancient Greek, they were able to use it as a reference to work out what the hieroglyphic symbols meant. This allowed the French scholar Jean-François Champollion to finally decode hieroglyphics in 1822. Without the Rosetta Stone, the meaning of hieroglyphics might have remained a mystery for many more years, leaving vast amounts of Egyptian history unreadable.

Award marks for: identifying the three languages/scripts, explaining the Greek connection, and showing understanding of why parallel texts are useful for translation.
