📜 The Spellbound Library

A Paper Escape Room · Ages 8–10

The Story So Far…

Deep in the heart of an ancient library, the Grand Librarian has locked away her most precious book — The Dictionary of Everything — inside a magical cabinet. A mischievous spelling sprite scrambled the locks and scattered clues across four reading rooms before disappearing in a puff of alphabet dust.

Only a true Spelling Champion can solve the four puzzles, collect the four-digit code, and set the book free!

Your mission: Solve each station puzzle. Write down the answer letter or number. Use all four answers to unlock the final code.

> ✏️ You will need: a pencil, some scrap paper, and your best spelling brain!

🔵 Station 1 — The Scrambled Scroll

(Your answer: a NUMBER)

The sprite jumbled four words. Unscramble each one, then count the total number of double letters across all four correctly spelled words.

ScrambledYour Answer
TREFIN_ _ _ _ _ _
NAOBLL_ _ _ _ _ _
ESSCSI_ _ _ _ _ _
TIRWET_ _ _ _ _ _

> Double letter = two of the same letter sitting next to each other (e.g., the LL in BALL).

Station 1 code digit = the total number of double-letter pairs you found → _

🟢 Station 2 — The Vowel Vault

(Your answer: a NUMBER)

The Librarian left a secret message. Read it and follow the instructions carefully.

> "Spelling is the key to reading, and reading is the key to everything."

Your task:

  • Count every vowel (A, E, I, O, U) in the sentence above — but only count the vowels in words that are 4 letters or fewer.

  • Write those short words here: ____________________________

  • Add up ALL the vowels in those short words only.
  • Station 2 code digit = that vowel total → _

    🟡 Station 3 — The Magic Word Ladder

    (Your answer: a LETTER)

    Climb the word ladder by changing one letter at a time. Each rung must be a real word!

    ```
    START → C A T
    _ A T (change the first letter to make something you hit a ball with)
    _ A _ (change the last letter to make something you carry shopping in)
    _ A _ (change the first letter to make something a doctor treats)
    _ _ _ (change the middle letter to make something used in cooking)
    FINISH → _ _ _
    ```

    > Take the first letter of your FINISH word.

    Station 3 code letter = _

    🔴 Station 4 — The Spelling Bee Cipher

    (Your answer: a NUMBER)

    Five words have been spelled out below. Circle every word that is spelled CORRECTLY. Then count how many you circled.

    #Word
    1RECIEVE
    2LIBRARY
    3FREIND
    4NECESSARY
    5BELEIVE

    Station 4 code digit = the number of correctly spelled words → _

    🚪 THE FINAL LOCK

    You have collected four answers. Arrange them in order to crack the code!

    ```
    ┌─────────────────────────────────────────┐
    │ │
    │ Station 1 Station 2 Station 3 Station 4 │
    │ [ _ ] [ _ ] [ _ ] [ _ ] │
    │ │
    │ THE CODE: _ _ _ _ │
    │ │
    └─────────────────────────────────────────┘
    ```

    Enter the code on your cabinet (or tell your parent/tutor!) to free The Dictionary of Everything!

    🎉 Congratulations, Spelling Champion!
    The Grand Librarian thanks you. The library is saved.
